Domaine Gautheron

Domaine Gautheron is located in the tiny village of Fley, surrounded by Chablis’ eastern hills in Northern Burgundy. It covers 28 hectares on some of Chablis’ best terroirs. The estate, created in 1809, is family owned and operated and has been for more than seven generations. Today Cyril, supported by father Alain and wife Agnes, is making some of the appellation’s finest wines. Gautheron focuses on expression of terroir to make graceful wines which respect the crisp and traditional characteristics of Chablis.

Cyrils wines can be drunk in their youth or after aging. He likes to balance exotic flavors with crispiness. They are the opposite of an austere Chablis, yet they age incredibly well. The wines are always on the fresh side, with ripe acidity, and that classic Chablis minerality. The appellation of Chablis is nestled in the Northern part of Burgundy between Paris and Dijon. It has a semi-continental climate, characterised by hot summers and cold, harsh winters. The wines are characterised by purity of fruit and lean, steely acidity. Chablis is divided in to four categories in order of ascension in quality: Petit Chablis, Chablis, Chablis Premier Cru and Chablis Grand Cru.

Nestled in the quaint wine-growing village of Fleys, just 4.5 km from Chablis, the estate is rooted in the Kimmeridgian terroir. The Kimmeridgian, a Jurassic-era soil rich in marine fossils like small comma-shaped oysters, lends the wines their signature mineral character. This unique geology, coupled with the area’s hot summers, harsh winters, and frost-prone springs, creates an ideal environment for cultivating Chardonnay. Certified “HVE” (High Environmental Value) Level 3, the estate is dedicated to sustainable viticulture, allowing the terroir to express itself fully.

Chablis – Named after the historic wine producing town that lies in the centre, Chablis is light and dry, famous for its crisp acidity and minerality. The Gautheron Chablis is made from 15-55 years old vines grown on north and northeasterly slopes. Floral notes, stonefruit, fresh butter, balance of liveliness, maturity, elegance and richness.
