San Polo

San Polo is a progressive estate in Montalcino, where tradition and innovation combine to produce refined and site-driven expressions of Sangiovese that capture the essence of this renowned appellation. The vineyards are positioned between 400–450 metres above sea level on poor, stony soils rich in galestro, a schistous clay that naturally limits vigour and yields, resulting in wines of greater concentration, structure, and aromatic precision. A meticulous approach to parcelling sees each vineyard block managed individually, allowing the estate to respond to subtle variations in soil, exposure, and microclimate, ultimately maximising the potential of a truly distinctive terroir. This detailed vineyard work translates directly into the wines, where purity of fruit, balance, and a clear sense of origin are consistently expressed across each cuvée. The estate is led by Marilisa Allegrini, one of Italy’s most influential wine figures and the first Italian woman to appear on the cover of Wine Spectator, whose vision brought her from Valpolicella to Tuscany to expand her family’s winemaking legacy. Together with her daughters, Carlotta and Caterina, she has shaped San Polo into a forward-thinking, certified organic winery grounded in sustainability, innovation, and respect for the land. Today, San Polo stands as a benchmark for modern Montalcino, where environmentally conscious viticulture is matched by a state-of-the-art, bio-architecturally designed cellar that minimises impact while enhancing quality.
