G.K.L.R. Vineyard was established by Gerard Kennedy and his wife Lucy, on a striking 32-hectare site along Heathcote’s Mount Camel Range. Planted progressively from 2018, the vineyard sits on the region’s renowned red Cambrian soils, formed from geology more than 550 million years old. Gerard’s background as a geologist has shaped every element of the project, from detailed soil mapping and rootstock selection to matching individual varieties and clones with the areas best suited to them. The easterly aspect protects the vines from the harshest afternoon sun, while the elevated position offers low frost risk and creates distinct growing conditions across the ridge and lower slopes.

The vineyard is planted with shiraz alongside climateresilient Italian varieties. Precision viticulture is central to the G.K.L.R. approach, with soil-moisture probes, satellite imagery, tissue sampling and targeted vineyard treatments used to manage each row according to its specific needs. This considered, data-driven approach is designed not only to produce high-quality, siteexpressive fruit, but to build a vineyard capable of thriving in a warmer, drier future.
