The Kay Brothers vineyards grace the rolling foothills of the Southern Mount Lofty Ranges in South Australia. Established in 1890 by Australian-born brothers Herbert and Frederick Kay, the heritage-listed winery celebrated its first grape crush in 1895 and remains the oldest McLaren Vale winery still in founding family hands. Today, the Kay family continues their winemaking traditions in the historic cellars. Third-generation Colin Kay retired in 2014, passing the reins to his daughter, Elspeth. Colin, however, still enjoys tasting and observing how Duncan Kennedy is shaping the family’s iconic wines.

Block 6 Shiraz is a cornerstone of Kay Brothers’ legacy. Planted in 1892, this 1.5-hectare vineyard produces full-bodied Shiraz with remarkable structure and the ability to age gracefully for decades. The 1.5-hectare vineyard thrives on diverse soils—red loam, heavy clay, and gravelly alluvium—underpinned by the complex “South Maslin Sands” geology. Its vines are cane-pruned and carefully maintained to suit the vineyard’s natural undulations and east-facing aspect.
