Ugo Lequio

Starting in the early 1980s, Ugo Lequio released his first bottles of wine following rigorous fruit selection from the six hectare Cascina Nuova vineyard. This historic property is located on the sun-drenched Gallina Hill that was once part of the Neive Conti Riccardi Candiani patrimony and now belongs to the Marcarino family. The Gallina Hill is one of the most interesting terroirs in Piedmont with the soil and micro-climate both extraodinary for cultivation of the vine, in particular Nebbiolo and Barbera, with vine plantings dating back to the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s.

Old vines, south facing slopes and extremely low yields coupled with traditional wine making techniques produce elegant wines fit for aging. Ugo’s personal conviction is that class and elegance are tangible in a great wine only if that wine is given sufficient time, in a stress-free atmosphere, to evolve. For this reason, Ugo insists on giving his wines a long and deserved rest before they are released.
